The Atlantic Oceanside is a Witham Family Hotels property, a New England hospitality group who independently owns and operates 13 hotel properties along the coast of Maine.  We have been serving our guests and travelers with fine dining and accommodations for over 30 years!  Our vision at Witham Family Hotels is to be an outstanding team of professionals operating hotels known for: exceptional customer service; comfortable, clean accommodations; and facilitating memorable experiences. We have been hosting J-1 Summer Work Travel students for the last several years.  We offer an opportunity for you to learn and grow both personally and professionally all while meeting amazing, diverse people and creating relationships that will last a lifetime. We will provide you with optional employee housing, that is within 1 ½ miles from your property. Our employee housing is meant to provide a safe place for our employees to live while working for us.  There is free city bus transportation in Bar Harbor so it is easy to get around town on your days off to explore the Island or visit Acadia National Park!

About Bar Harbor, Maine:

Bar Harbor is adjacent to Acadia National Park, home to 1,532-foot Mount Cadillac. Acadia’s stunning mountains, lakes and sea cliffs can be viewed from a number of vantage points on the island.  The Bar Harbor area possesses a great selection of activities, including the Mount Desert Island Oceanarium, Kisma Preserve and the Great Maine Lumberjack Show! If you are adventurous and into nature, this is the perfect place to spend your summer enjoying whale watching, park tours in Acadia National Park, or biking and hiking activities all summer.

Public transportation is available on Bar Harbor. There is an Island Explorer Shuttle Bus system that provides free rides. The Shuttle Bus has many routes and can take passengers to Acadia National Park, hiking trails in the area, the beach, and shopping areas in Bar Harbor. Even though shuttle rides are free, when it is taken into Acadia, there is a fee that every passenger on the shuttle must pay.

Did you know?

·     We provide housing!  A housing deposit is due upon arrival in Bar Harbor.  Check your job profile for more detailed housing information.


·     Mount Desert Island (MDI), home to Bar Harbor and Acadia, is the biggest island off the coast of Maine.


·     MDI was a popular summer retreat for many prominent American families such as the Rockefellers, Morgans, Fords, Vanderbilts, and Carnegies.  Many of their summer cottages were destroyed in a 1947 fire.  Today, it’s a popular quiet summer retreat for many celebrities. 


·     President Barack Obama was the first sitting president to visit Acadia, in July 2010. 

Weather in Bar Harbor, Maine:

Maine experiences warm (although generally not hot), humid summers. Coastal areas are moderated somewhat by the Atlantic Ocean. Daytime highs are generally in the 75–80°F (24–27°C) range throughout the state in July and August, with overnight lows in the high 50’s°F (around 15°C). How to Get There


Students must contact their employer at least one week prior to their arrival in the US to arrange pickup from Bangor.  Students must arrive between 8am (8h) and 4pm (16h). If arriving afterhours, students may need to find accommodation in the city in which they land. 

Students can choose to fly into one of three airports: Boston Logan Airport (BOS), Portland International Jetport (PWM), or Bangor International Airport (BGR). 

Boston Logan Airport (BOS):

·        Once landing in Boston, students can take the Concord Coach Lines to Bangor, ME.  They will need to purchase a ticket, which should cost about $45 US.  At the Concord station in Bangor, the employer will pick-up the students and take them to their housing in Bar Harbor. 

Portland International Jetport (PWM)

·        Once landing in Portland, students can take an Uber, Lyft, or Taxi to the Concord Coach Lines bus station.  From there they will purchase a ticket to Bangor, ME for about $27 US.  At the Concord station in Bangor, the employer will pick-up the students and take them to their housing in Bar Harbor. 

Bangor International Airport (BGR):

·        Employer will pick up students at the Airport, provided the students have given the employer all the travel information at least one week before arrival.
